10 / 24 / 2006 Update:

MEETING NOTICE:
All hands on deck for an update meeting Thursday, November 2 -- 7 p.m. at Bennos. Track Operator Mittelstadt has an update to provide, and we will begin to plan our 2007 racing schedule. There has been significant movement in favor of our track since the last meeting.

Milwaukee BMX jerseys should also be ready for distribution at that time.

Walworth BMX Update:
There seems to be some confusion as to the race and practice fees for the upcoming indoor season at Elkhorn. The rumor mill came back to us that the $15 single point race fee and $10 practice night fee reflect some major increase in cost over last year. I recalled those fees from when I was still racing in spring '05 and decided to get to the bottom of it with a call to track operator Candy Karau. She confirmed that the prices are the same this year as last. They recognize that moto-counts have been a bit behind this year and were mindful that an increase in price could keep even more folks away. So, that's the story there, folks ... let's get the word out so that rumor goes away ASAP. I never thought that we'd become the SNOPES of the BMX world ... but, we're pretty keen on facts around here.

Oh yeah ... Candy welcomes any future questions about Walworth BMX at (815) 874-8719, Weekdays between 10am and 4pm.

Personally, I'm absolutely looking forward to the opener there in just more than a week (Saturday -- November 4)

Bench Racing:
While talking with Candy, she asked how things were progressing in Milwaukee. I communicated that starting a track took far more committment than I ever imagined. She chuckled and told me about their early days running the Rockford track. Jake was handed the keys, a couple of clipboards and a few rakes at the conclusion of a racing season in the mid 1980's ... and, before the sentiment of the "good luck" wishes of the former track operator had even worn off ... a couple of bills that totalled in excess of $800 arrived in the mail. The early years were spent in beg, borrow or steal (well, I'm pretty sure just like us they never actually stole anything) mode ... which, for those that have pitched in to build Milwaukee BMX ... will sound awfully familiar. Candy told me about the earliest Rockford BMX concession stand, a metal shed affixed to Jake's snowmobile trailer, to provide a "movable" solution that the Rockford Parks District found acceptable. And, also about a stack of telephone poles that Jake procurred one afternoon after spotting them stacked behind a local filling station. It took a ton of patience and fortitude to make it all work out.

Fast forward twenty years and Rockford BMX is a model of success. We've always said that we aspire to be like Rockford BMX ... little did we know how much our start up actually reflected their formative years.

Milwaukee BMX volunteer, and Direct Link factory team 28 expert, Tim Eiring announced a recent engagement to his g-friend Kristyn. Congrats to the entire Eiring clan on that one. Sandi, one down ... three to go, eh?

That's about it for now ... C-Ya at the finish line.

Thanks, Kev! I am just thrilled with Tim & Kristyn's news (oh, and only 2 to go ;-) -- although Greg & his gal, Sarah, have plans for after her graduation from nursing school at UWM in about 2 years). Kristyn will be welcomed to the Eiring clan with open arms -- we've all been crazy about her for years!

Is this open to the public? I'd love to drop by and meet the crew that's been putting this together. I have a few laptops to drop off too!

Bill ...

You would be absolutely welcome to join in. We're not the most exciting group, which is mostly Mittelstadt's fault. It will be super good to put a face with a name.

I wish we had a message forum.. This is the closest thing I can find to it so I'll drop my question here..

I just picked up a micro GT bike for my youngest son (4 yrs old). We used to go to the Torque Center for our gear. Now that they are gone, can someone recommend a place that carries the normal safety gear?

Bill,

Maybe one of the other guys will chime in here ... but, I suspect, because BMX has been absent from Milwaukee for so long ... it's going to be at best real hit and miss for anybody having safety equipment in stock for little guys.

Before you go hitting up the big online retailers, there are a couple things you could do to support local interests. First, you could order stuff through your LBS ... but, if they aren't down with BMX, it's hard to say that they'll come through with just the right stuff for you.

Second, it would be a great idea to make a run to Elkhorn next weekend just to check out the goodies that the little kids are using. My six year old has been using skateboarding elbow pads and knee pads pretty successfully since he was your little guys age. He's moving into some more MX specific gear now that he's getting a little bigger, a little faster, and the falls are getting somewhat harder. If you are moved by the moment, the good folks at Bob's bike shop usually have some gear in the first turn area I'm sure they'd be happy to hook you up with.

Third, most good motorcycle dealerships that are into off road bikes for kids have surprisingly well stocked equipment sections. Don and Roys in Brookfield and Sportland 2 in Oak Creek come to mind as places I've seen that have a bunch of goodies.

I'm sure the local bike shops are sitting in "wait and see" mode as it relates to stocking BMX race bikes and gear ... with a little success at our track ... and a few more enquiries like yours, it's a safe bet that by the time your small racer grows out of his first generation stuff ... there'll be a few shops locally that will be able to hook him up with the next biggest size.

Guess the theme of growing is more than a metaphor ... as it will be good for all of us.

Hi, My son (7) and I (45) would like to renew our ABA membership under Milwaukee BMX. Is that an option? We would also be interested in wearing Milwaukee BMX jerseys. My son would do more for jersey placings, but we both like getting out there.

Check Motorsports Factory in Waukesha for gear. They probably have the best selection in the area.

Hey Tim and Leo ...

Another father son combo steps up at Milwaukee BMX. (LBS owners, take note ... start stocking up on mini's, juniors and cruisers.)

Tim, there are a couple of ways that you could renew your ABA memberships through Milwaukee BMX. Option 1: The downloadable PDF forms are in the right hand column of the home page ... or here http://www.ababmx.com/member/3/membership.pdf ... fill out everything and don't forget to sign the release forms on the second page, make sure you note that you want your membership credited to track #1730 (Milwaukee BMX) and include a check made payable to the American Bicycle Association for the proper amount. Annual fees should be $45 for you, and $40 for your son as first and second family members notes on the form.

That would probably be the quickest and easiest way to re-new and credit to Milwaukee BMX.

Alternatively, if you can make our meeting on Thursday night, I'll make sure that Mittelstadt brings the paper work ... and you could take care of it there.

Thanks for your question ... and the advice for the other poster on the safety equipment issue.

As for Milwaukee BMX jerseys ... the first batch is at the printers and should be ready by tomorrow. I'll get my kid dudded up in his new threads and get a picture up on the web. If there is enough interest ... I'm pretty sure we can get another order going in November.
