More Jumpers !!!

Below are a few of the many photos submitted by Sam Gillis, who spent his entire last weekend getting fried out in the sun, and fought off fatigue and "shutter finger fatigue" ... yes, Sam sent us like 500 photos from the weekend !!!  We'll try and post up what we can soon.

Nick Campanelli with the old school style ... laying a little flattie for us ... Nick is a superb jumper and a fast young racer.  He's definitely one of the young shredders to keep an eye on at Milwaukee BMX.

JUMP SHOTS:
Although I wish I could claim it as my idea ... the single best thing the track crew did in revitalizing the track this past spring was to eliminate the wedge out of the last turn and turn the last straight table into a tall, but short and flowy double. We've got a ton of great photos from over the weekend and a few that I grabbed last night to share. Look for more to be added to this post very soon.


I know I've written about a million times about the level of competition in our 41-45 class at Milwaukee ... but, when you consider that Bryan Dickerson, Mike Froh and Ed Morris all solidly made their mains at Rockford this year ... which is arguably the strongest non West Coast national on the ABA national circuit ... well, that's about all the proof anybody really needs. When they aren't beating each other up on the track ... these guys really have a chance to showcase their skills. Here's 45 year old Ed Morris, a couple years closer to collecting social security than being a high school graduate, flowing along like it's 1982, when he was undoubtedly equally fearless at all of 19 years old.


42 year old Brian Woods has some fun stories about his years as an older expert (from late 1970's and early 1980's, jeez ...) along with his days as an A-pro in the early and mid 1980's. He ran laps with guys like Tim Judge, Eddie King, and Mike Paulson back then ... which would be roughly equivolent to gating up with Denzel Stein, Kris Fox and Joey Bradford today. A 20+ year break from the sport, lasting from the late 1980's to last year, obviously didn't slow him down much. This shot shows Brian's still got, as we used to say when we were kids, style for miles.


Not to be outdone by "old dudes", 17 year old show-off Ben Kohls, threw out some awfully rad stuff of his own, including this super-high full-tuck huck ... and, it's a dandy for sure.

A few words of Thanks !!!

First to John Mencheski from Wisconsin Rapids, for his exceptionally generous donation of enough tarps to cover our entire track ... they have already been put to the test and really saved the day when the track took a short hard burst of rain late Saturday afternoon.

Holding those big beasties down were several hundred lbs. of sand bags generously donated, filled and loaded by the fine folks at Rivers Edge Farm Market and their staff strong men, Bryan Wendt and Ethan Gerhardt. Laura Kohls went to the trouble of trucking them from River's Edge in Jefferson to the track. AWESOME !!!

To Jon Engelhardt, a steady competitor in the 41-45 cruiser class, donated all the jersies that were raffled off on Saturday. Additionally, Jon sat out yesterday so that he could provide necessary medic services for the Redline Cup Qualifier.

to Ray Ekcert who must be in really good standing with his bosses at Waste Management -- for their super generous donation of the dumpsters we filled as a means to keep our track neat and tidy throughout the weekend.

And, to our friends at Sun Ringle who kicked in a the set of 20" Superstock Wheels for Saturday's raffle ... and a bunch of pairs of socks as well.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
If a picture is worth a thousand words, I probably won't have to write a single thing in this blog for the rest of the season ... just as soon as figure out just what to do with all the images we have from various sources that were captured throughout the weekend. With well over a thousand photos to review, even with me working the math, that's about a million words worth. In any event, we'll link 'em up as we post 'em up for sure.

The first group comes from Rosie Jankiewicz ... who has posted up more than 200 shots to her website for your viewing pleasure. The shots were captured at yesterday's Redline Cup Qualifier. We hope you enjoy 'em ... they are pretty doggone cool for sure.

Results and picture postings from Milwaukee BMX are coming ... but, please be patient ... with 69 groups of riders (37 Saturday and 32 Sunday) it's probably going to take us a little while to key in all the names.

PICTURE PERFECT !!!



37 motos ... more than 150 riders ... a great day and even more great racing.  ANNNDDDD, we get to do it all again tomorrow !!!  Thanks to everyone who making this weekend such a major success.

We did take a bit of rain late this afternoon ... but, it was the kind of helping rain that we actually really needed.  I sat in the car to see what the track would be like ... after we tarped the first corner and second straight (Thanks John Mencheski - and there will be more on that soon)

Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

BMX in the News !!!



Though it's certainly not going to interrupt anybody's daily dose of Brett Favre speculation, Tom Held at the Journal Sentinel was nice enough to put together this little piece on Milwaukee BMX which appeared in his "Off the Couch" blog at JSOnline.com today ... thanks for the ink, Tom. I definitely enjoyed our talk.

There are also a couple other great articles that were recently published that I wanted to share. First, is this lengthy piece from Bicycling Magazine "BMX GOING BIG". This article is such a great read ... and is exceptionally eye opening as to what phenomenal athletes the world's top BMX racers really are. I hope you all enjoy reading it as much as I did.

Finally, Tim Eiring, who competes with us from time to time, and also helped out on several volunteer days, including our 2008 New Rider Clinic, was recently featured in this cool article in the Small Business Times. We wonder how much Tim's corporate insurance rates have gone up as a result. Great article Tim !!!

Finally, some really depressing news came in from Linda Weimer at Fond du Lac BMX this afternoon. After a botched break in at their track building ... the would be vandal turned arsonist and burned the building down. Insurance is going to help out ... but, the long and the short is ... Fondy BMX is temporarily out of commission. We at Milwaukee owe the Weimer's a lot as they provided a ton of support while we were in the process of getting started. We'll definitely do what we can to reciprocate in this time of need.

Get out your Good Luck Charms !!!

Four leaf clovers, lucky rabits foot, race day socks that haven't been washed in three seasons ... whatever it is that brings you good fortune ... keep it nearby and cross your fingers that we don't take too much more rain tonight.

I was just to the track about an hour ago and it was drying nicely. The straights were mostly smooth and in race ready condition. The damage from the rain this morning was pretty minimal. The start hill remains nicely tucked in by the tarp that we put down on Thursday night, and there are additional tarps (Thanks Randy Olson) helping to protect the second straight. We do have some really minor wash areas ... but, all would be easily fixed by hand with minimal effort. The turns are holding up nicely as well.

Randy Olson, the Mittelstadt's, the Bratz's, the Kluth's, the Schmitt's all lent their hands and backs througout the week last week and over the weekend to get the track in what was perhaps the best condition it's ever been in. Todd Zimmerman was generous enough to once again lend his drag (a device he really ought to patent and sell to every other BMX track operator on earth -- it works that good!) and Bryan Dickerson picked it up at his house and delivered it to us. Huge help and we needed every bit of it. Thanks guys and gals !!!

We'll carefully monitor the weather and do what we can to keep our race program for tomorrow night in tact ... the rest is where the good luck comes in. (Now, where did I leave my lucky valve cap?)

Volunteer Request:

We are planning to drag, rake, water and roll the straights tonight and over the weekend. This will give us a great racing surface for next Tuesday and for the upcoming double / triple weekend. Because of this -- THURSDAY (tonight) PRACTICE IS CANCELLED:

If you can join us tonight (6:30 to dusk) to help rake straights and wheel out the piles of gravel we'll generate as a result ... it would be helpful and appreciated.

Last night, we pulled weeds out of the straights and from the first turn. We also worked on the exit of the second corner, and straightened up the staging area.

Also, a reminder that if anyone has extra tarps they can lend or donate over the next week ... we can use them to keep the turns covered as much as possible before the upcoming double / triple weekend.

LOOKING AHEAD:

With our big 500 point weekend just two weeks away (State Championship Qualifier / Redline Cup Qualifier) we are charting out possible work-nights and asking for your help and cooperation.

First, To get the track all spiffed up and dialed in we are looking at the following dates as volunteer work times.

Wednesday July 30th (evening)
Thursday July 31st (evening - tentative - would take place of regularly scheduled gate practice)
Sunday August 3rd (daytime)
Wednesday August 6th (evening)
Thursday August 7th (evening)

As always, if you can make it ... please bring leaf rakes, thatch rakes, or shovels if you have them.  Milwaukee BMX is always looking for these items as well, so, any donations would certainly be well appreciated.

Second, in an attempt to preserve the good work our volunteers do on the start hill and turns, we'd like to cover whatever we can in the event that showers would move through the area.  If you have unused or extra tarp covers that you would be willing to donate, or allow the track to use for the week preceding the August 9 & 10 multi pointers, we'd certainly be grateful for your generosity.  

Third and last for now, awards will be given out to 4th place at our Redline Cup and not to all participants in the main (as was printed in BMX'er magazine - which was a mis-print).

RACE ANNOUNCEMENT:

Our sanctioning body, the American Bicycle Association has agreed to grant us a "make up" race - tomorrow night - Thursday July 17th - instead of open gate practice.

As with all TUESDAY races ... signup and registration will be open between 5:30 - 6:30.

All of this, of course, is weather permitting.

Don't forget the Stile Industries Race Camp coming up on Tuesday July 22nd and Wednesday July 23rd, the Camp will run from 11am to 6pm each day. ANOTHER WASHOUT:

8:20 A.M. -- Yet another band of rain showers moved through the area early Saturday morning forcing the cancellation of Saturday's Milwaukee BMX racing activities at Crystal Ridge.

Our next event is scheduled for Tuesday, July 15th and the forecast between now and then is excellent.

We'll also be checking with the ABA on the possibility of adding a Thursday night race in place of our regularly scheduled practice.  An announcement will be made at Tuesday night's race and, as always, we'll keep you posted right here.

Mother Nature Continues Messing with Milwaukee BMX

There must be a skip in this record ... but rain not only washed out our Tuesday race, but, also a fair amount of the scheduled rake and ride last night. When I finally arrived at the track at 7:15, it was evident that work had been done on the start hill and that dirt had also been moved into the areas of the washouts on the second and third straights. For that effort, we have the Dickersons, Mike Froh, the Kohls, Bratz's and the Middelstadts to thank.

We are continuing to plan on racing tomorrow and there will be some modest activity at the track throughout the day today (Friday) if it dries enough for us to get on it. If not ... a few volunteers arriving early (between 8 and 9 a.m. would be helpful) tomorrow morning ought to be adequate for us to get the thing in shape to race on.

More rain tonight could obviously have an effect on our plans -- so, please look for a morning update right here. And, as always, you can call the track at 414-429-3485 for up to the minute updates.

Tuesday July 8 Race is CANCELLED:

Additionally, the gate practice scheduled for Thursday will be rake and ride ... meaning, until volunteers have had enough time to work on the track in preparation for Saturday's single point race ... the track will be closed. If we get enough accomplished Thursday p.m. and there is still daylight ... we'll definitely drop some gates for the volunteers that help out that evening.

We're sorry for any inconvenience this causes -- but, until we can control the weather around us -- the best we'll be able to do is offer our apologies and keep moving forward.

We hope to see you Thursday night.

Volunteers can help by bringing thatch rakes and flat shovels as the corners need the most attention.

Milwaukee Riders FLYING in Minnesota:


We received these photos from Tina Gillis recently showing how she totally cleaned house over the weekend at the Land O' Lakes Nationals in Minnesota. Far out, Tina ... that's some pretty spiff looking hardware you scored ... and, nice leads too, eh? (that's supposed to be Minnesota humor). Thanks for sending along the pics.



Nice to see that Curt Zizzo and Collin Kohls also brought home a couple of wins, while Bryan Dickerson won the 41-45 cruiser class Saturday and made the main on Sunday and other area riders, including Jacob Hinzpeter, Cory Calliendo, Fred Yanke, Kommanche Jordan and a bunch of others made mains and scored some nice finishes.

Race Photos: 6/24/2008


Honestly, you may be able to manual ... but, you probably can't manual like this. Jacob Hinzpeter is showing super smooth style and blazing speed in '08. His backside is going to be an awful familiar site to his competition for the rest of this season.


Anatomy of a wreck ... the obvious problem here is the rider who's having his issues down low ... he's full sideways and has exactly no feet on his pedals ... a problem which which I've become all to familiar with throughout my many years of racing. What's somewhat less obvious is that our lead rider, Anthony Brzezinski, in dodging our slideways rider down low, is testing the absolute outer limits of the first turn. Careful young man ... I'm not even sure what's behind that corner ... it could be the end of the earth !!! Congratulations to the tough young man in red, by the way, who came back to take the next two round wins and the overall for this class last night.


David Smith with perfect turn form shoulders square to the direction his bike is moving in ... head turned to the direction he's ready to move in. Class is 8 intermediate ... but, Garrett Kluth (chasing) is still only 7.



Dane O'Donnell and Daniel Walkowiak had some real back and forth laps with Dane taking down the overall win.



RJ Eckert hauling so much mail that his tires are actually airborne in the middle of the first turn. The shadow line at his tires tells the story. Talk about speedy delivery ... pretty cool, RJ.



Payton Dickerson has got to score the save of the year with this little number. He speculates that his leg cramped up just as he was about to pull up for the big first straight double. As he went up the front side, he got bucked pretty hard. At this moment, with the front wheel dropped and on straight arms and legs, Payton is probably as convinced as I was that disaster was inevitable. However, he managed to hang onto it and came out of this really awkward looking moment smelling like a rose.


Nobody has Milwaukee's rhythm dialed like Ben Kohls. Another super looking photo of him pulling a very solid group of riders, including Dana Mittelstadt, Andrew Wipiejewski and Payton Dickerson into the last turn at warp speed.



Chris Wipijewski (48), Collin Kohls (3) and Nate Booth (57) barreling down into the first corner. With Kohls a little dinged up from a street riding incident that happened earlier in the day -- Wip was pretty much tail-lights and took down a nice win in 15 Intermediate.



Target: Finish line -- target acquired -- affirmative -- all systems go -- achieving maximum thrust !!! 7 year old Maxwell Wilson has the look of determination of a fighter jet pilot.

MORE KUWAHARA CLASSIC PICS:

True:  20 years of age separate the riders running  side by side in this photo ... but, the fact that he's blasting the 23' double probably gives away the fact that Ben Kohls #1, is the 17 expert while #347 Fred Yanke (a former pro) has a day job to think about.  Chris Bratz, inside, wound up third.  Yanke actually made us old guys pretty proud when he pulled Ben all the way to the rhythm section.  And, it's not like Kohls is any kind of pushover at Milwaukee ... the kid is almost certainly our fastest regular competitor. 

Pride of Edgar, WI right here, folks ... #18 Tyler Witt made the trip to Milwaukee to dust off #10 Jared Engelhart and #22 Eric Hahn.

#287, Tina Gillis with a big first straight lead over #505 Ginger Kluth and the Redline Cup #1 of Terri Bratz.  Gillis just returned to racing after a long time away earlier this summer ... and already, she's a factor in her class at nationals, and giving a few of us guys fits when she gates up in our classes.

Len Cabaltera leading out the 28 and (way) over novice class.  Karl Ausdembruch sits in second in the SE colors, Mike Wenzlaff sits in third, and Jay Labecki sits in fourth, biding his time as he often does.  Jay moved around Wenzlaff for the three spot as the riders crossed the line.

The two riders out front in this photo are sure to be up to intermediate in no time flat.  #79 Sam Cabaltera has a couple of wins and #282 Dane O'Donnell, using the inside line in this photo to his advantage, pulled away after this shot for the win -- it was his sixth.  #309 Jonah Ausdembruch, 103 Daniel Walkowik and #6 Brittany Brzezinski are giving chase.

Mikey Cabaltera (#91 - 5 and under novice) leads#87 Max Schmitt down into the first turn.  The order changed as the race progressed, with Devonte Smith taking the win, followed by Schmitt and Cabaltera. 
 
Brad Olson (#4 - 15x) pulling the 17-18 Intermediate class down into the first turn.  Giving hot pursuit are #19 Bryce Engelhardt (17i), #34 Keith Hartfiel (17i) and #13 Dana Mittelstadt (18i).

Jacob Szymanski (10x), Kasen Vanooyen (10x) and Reece Rankins (9x) having at it tooth and nail ... no lift in any of these guys ... they are all battling to get down into the first turn first.

Racing this weekend:

Please remember that registration for 2008 Saturday Milwaukee BMX races will be open from 9:30 until 11 a.m. Race fees for the Kuwahara Klassic double point event this Saturday are $20.

Things will be busy with the Kuwahara Klassic this weekend and we'll have lots of goodies to raffle througout the day including a Kuwahara race bike and a couple of framesets. Tasty !!!

Fond du Lac BMX Sunday Single Pointer
Our good friends at Fond du Lac BMX passed along word today that their track is ready to rock and they are resuming their normal racing schedule this Sunday. So, if you don't have anything planned for Sunday ... and, you still got your psych on from the Kuwahara Classic ... or, if you are the lucky winner of the Kuwie bike and you need somewhere to shred on your new scoot ... head on up Highway 41 and check 'em out.

First EVER Kuwahara Klassic THIS Saturday


Yeah buckaroos ... I once read that Kuwahara means "Mulberry Meadow" in Japanese in a BMX magazine that was published by a a semi-odd, but incredibly entertaining guy with a peculiar fixation with the movie, "The Wizard of Oz" (which, did you know that was the first movie ever to be shown in color?). For something like 25 years, I told that non-truth to anyone who would listen. Well, the Kuwie website says otherwise ... but, while Mulberry Meadow may be out ... the Kuwahara Klassic is definitely in !!!

In addition to those very important double points and big awards up for grabs ... Kuwahara Bicycles has kicked in all sorts of stuff, including a Laserlite Pro bike like the one shown in the photo above. Some lucky BMX dude, dudette - or mom or pop is taking that thing home with them Saturday afternoon. The bike will be raffled off at the track. This bike is a race ready pro XL that is chock full of radness and retails out for just about $550. Suh-weet !!!
We've also got a couple of Kuwie framesets that will also be part of a raffle. So, bring a few extra bucks, and think about how you are going to get all your goodies home if you are one of the lucky winners !!!
